Plastyczne mitologie Jolanty Brach-Czainy

Wizualizacja „mapy myśli” Brach-Czainy musiałaby objąć szerokie pasmo rzeczywistości, przenika bowiem cały świat: rozplenia się i dywersyfikuje w pojedynczych działaniach i interpretacjach. Jednocześnie sięga do rozmaitych tradycji i tekstów kultury.

Abstract: This article discusses the possibilities of using the metaphors of cracks and membranes in teaching academic writing. It points out that it is the writing classes that can provide a point of resistance to the transformations of the university geared towards neoliberal efficiency. The intellectual-emotional tasks set by Brach-Czaina navigating the library and existence allows for the initiation of concrete tasks at the level of literary description, metaphors and emotions. This article makes a preliminary parallel between Jolanta Brach-Czaina’s and Susan Sontag’s projects. The immersion of both in modernism and its subsequent transgression, especially the importance they both place on metaphors, allows for such a convergent reading. Furthermore, in their intellectual biographies, both are authority figures.

Abstract: This text is a humorous, literary-philosophical reflection on childbirth, the postpartum period and parenthood as experiences undermining the established Western ways of treating subjectivity and questioning the traditional way of practicing philosophy. Following Jolanta Brach-Czaina, the author looks at the literal and metaphorical power of the lower half of the body, despised by philosophers. Attempting to answer the question about the sources of vitality and humor in Brach-Czaina’s texts, she draws an analogy between her image of the uterus and the Bakhtinian concept of the “material ” in François Rabelais’ novel.

Abstract: This essay, oscillating around Jolanta Brach-Czaina’s short story entitled S., offers a contextual reading that takes into account the philosopher’s reflections from her various texts on inter-species kinship, which are problematic today. The overriding point of reference for this approach is the ethical perspective inherent to post-anthropocentric studies. Questions about the intricacies of human-animal relationships are at the center of my considerations. While Brach-Czaina’s enigmatic text questions the efficacy of communication with the so-called companion species and their agency, or even subjectivity, it is also exceptionally accurate in identifying the usually tabooed ambivalences of the experience of care, especially those related to the crisis-induced sense of doubt or powerlessness, and being overwhelmed with responsibility and abnegation, which substantially weaken or re-evaluate intimacy. As a result, on the one hand, S. proves to be an exceptional testimony of the essayist’s struggle with her own ambiguous attitude towards animals; on the other hand, it provokes reflection on possible reconfigurations of inter-species relationships. Such considerations are inscribed in the framework of the autoethnographic narration dedicated to the terminal illness of the author’s cat.

Abstract: This article is a look at the film Jeanne Dielman, 23 Commerce Quay, 1080 Brussels, directed by Chantal Akerman, from the perspective of Jolanta Brach-Czaina’s philosophical reflections. The main axis of considerations is focused on the juxtaposition of the poetics of cinematic modernism and the way of presenting everyday life in the film with the notion of “busyness” proposed by the philosopher. This article offers an analysis of the film by the Belgian director and the basic ideas presented in the collection of essays Szczeliny istnienia [The Cracks in Existence]. Consequently, the possibility of a metaphysical view of the film is revealed, as well as an interesting ideological dialogue between Akerman and Brach-Czaina.

Abstract: The author is interested in the mutual illumination of Jane Hirshfield’s poetry and Jolanta Brach-Czaina’s philosophical essay. The poems of the American woman and Szczeliny istnienia are set in the stream of mindfulness, and become ways of cognition for the readers. Both authors deal with registers of everyday life that constitute the essence of experience, and write about them in a language that is far from cold. This restructuring on the part of the reader can lead to poetic therapy and epiphanies of everyday life.

Abstract: This article interprets Anna Królikiewicz’s piece Piramida zwierząt [A Pyramid of Animals] from the perspective of Jolanta Brach-Czaina’s philosophical considerations. Królikiewicz’s installation can be viewed as a postulate to re-evaluate the hitherto human-non-human hierarchies. Inter-species understanding, based on the principle of fragility and susceptibility to injury, allows Brach-Czaina’s thought to be directed towards an artistic reading inspired by post-humanist research. Both artistically and philosophically coherent, the interpretation focused on the matter of food also becomes a pretext for sensitizing us to the aesthetic dimension of everyday life.

Abstract: The material for the analysis consists of works by female Master’s students at the University of Arts in Poznań, based on Jolanta Brach-Czaina’s essay from the volume Błony umysłu [Membranes of the Mind]. The photographs and films are the result of activities carried out during the course Theory of Photography. Their aim is to encourage students to create a visual response to a theoretical text. From the corpus of texts proposed during the classes, I have selected works that closely deal with the issue of the relationship between reproduction and experiencing non-image reality, analyzed by the philosopher in her essay Łuski-maski [Scale-masks]. Although the author criticizes photography in her text, the young artists find in it inspiration to reflect on the relationship between documenting time and existence, and experiencing them. They also undertake a visual critique of the theses presented in the text. Thus they find a way to apply philosophical considerations to artistic practice. The works analyzed in the text were produced between 2019 and 2021 by three authors: Dagmara Barańska-Morzy, Joanna Berg and Joanna Czarnota.

Abstract: This text is an analysis of Jolanta Brach-Czaina’s collection of articles from the 1980s entitled Etos nowej sztuki [The Ethos of New Art]. At that time, the philosopher did not analyze the art of women (with the exception of Teresa Murak), nor did she use a feminist interpretive lens. She consistently sought emancipatory and community-based tendencies in art. The philosopher’s later article Radykalna sztuka kobiet [The Radical Art of Women], the lack of public access to broader knowledge about her biography, and the posthumous memoirs of her five friends/students provide the context.

Abstract: Pulled into the vortex of the digital netherworld, contemporary humans are alienating themselves from their own body. These disembodied subjects, reflecting themselves almost exclusively in electronic media, are no longer able to live among Others. They are sometimes disciplined by a painful clash with the matter. Reading Szczeliny istnienia [The Cracks in Existence] may prove to be an effective remedy for many a cybernetic narcissist. Jolanta Brach-Czaina wrote a book whose relevance grows has only grown over time. It is a text that penetrates the reader “to the bone”, allowing them to feel and understand the structure and consistency of their “flesh” existence more deeply.

Abstract: This research aims to read Jerzy Pilch’s diaries and biographies through the prism of his experience of passing, incurable illness and progressing physical disability. An important context for the proposed reading of the (auto)biographical narratives is the notion of destructive plasticity codified by Catherine Malabou, the reflections emerging from studies on masculinities, and above all, an attempt at a (psycho)therapeutic understanding of the voice of the subject that is re/producing himself. Such a juxtaposition offers the possibility of a simultaneous and inseparable viewing of bodily and emotional transformations experienced by the (un)accepting male-subject.

Abstract: This article is an overview of selected philosophical concepts that address the topic of care in the spirit of Barbara Cassin’s “untranslatables”. In this approach, untranslatability is understood not as the impossibility of translation, but as the recognition of meanings characteristic of different languages, cultures and epochs. Each of the concepts is presented through the prism of meanings present in different languages, starting with ancient philosophy and its concept of care for oneself reinterpreted later in French by Michel Foucault, through care for the soul by Czech philosopher Jan Patočka and Heidegger’s Sorge, ending with ethics of care, created mainly by English thinkers. The author attempts to bring out the similarities and differences in the understanding of the concepts translated into Polish as “care”.

Abstract: Care is a universal phenomenon conceptualized in the American cultural space. When the conceptualization of care reached France, the problem of translating the name of this concept arose and is yet to be solved. A semantic analysis of the closest equivalent of “care” in French, soin, reveals that despite the semantic proximity, the use of soin as a translation of “care” is problematic. This raises the question of what should actually be translated: the English word “care” or “care” as the name of the concept. Related to this question is the hypothesis that although care is a universal phenomenon, its Anglo-Saxon conceptualization is culturally determined. Care is related to nursing, which, in a sense, constitutes its professionalization; the French name of the field, soins infirmiers, contains the closest French equivalent to “care”. However, the relationship between nursing and care is not as simple as it might seem.

Abstract: The author attempts to broaden the educational understanding of care. Starting from the traditional view of educational care in the category of welfare, he shows how it is related to the modernist imaginary of the logic of emancipation at the level of assumptions made about the world. Following the logic of responsibility, he proposes a different set of references, consisting of the understanding of education introduced by Hannah Arendt, the morphology of the school by Jan Masschelein and Maarten Simons, the conceptualization of studying devised by Tyson Lewis, and the immanent ontology of teaching that the latter author develops with Joris Vlieghe. Within such a constellation, this essay poses a question about the care of teaching expressed in the teaching-specific way students and teachers spend time together, considering that teachers’ attentiveness to what emerges in studying the world together creates a peculiar relationship with what exists.

Abstract: This article refers to how elderly people, experiencing various limitations in everyday life and needing the support of others, participate in culture. The author analyzes the selected results of two educational and research projects carried out by the Centre for Educational Practices (CPE), which operates as part of Zamek Culture Centre in Poznań. The category of dependence used in these projects serves as a starting point for the consideration of interdependencies, connections and networks of relationships existing in the field of institutional culture. The aim of the analysis is to reflect on the possible ways of understanding and framing inclusive cultural practices in relation to knowledge, care and mindfulness, as well as in connection to relational concepts of participation in culture. In a broader context, the issues discussed are combined with the ways in which cultural institutions act when the need for social solidarity, coexistence and cooperation arises.

Abstract: The author reviews research on behavioral perceptions of people in emergency situations. Based on surveys and interviews with disaster victims, he shows that the belief that is widespread among the public (and in pop culture) that people in groups act irrationally and often get carried away by their emotions is unfounded. In difficult situations, people are able to self-organize and not only look out for their own interests or show irrational impulsive behavior. The mechanisms responsible for this include the formation of a new group identity, a sense of community and the associated expectation of mutual support in this difficult situation, as well as a sense that self-organization is an effective way to deal with a given challenge.

Abstract: This article concerns Maximilien Robespierre’s famous speech entitled Report drawn up on behalf of the Committee of Public Safety on the relationship between religious and moral ideas and republican principles, and on national holidays, delivered in the forum of the French National Convention on May 7, 1794. This speech is an expression of Robespierre’s new conception of both the French Revolution and the Republic itself, which was henceforth to be based on virtue, altruism, and care that every republican citizen ought to show towards all other members of the French national community. The cement of this altruism and care promoted by Robespierre was the cult of the Supreme Being, which by giving the Revolution new energy was to take it to an unprecedented metaphysical level.

Abstract: While we may conceptualize numerous forms of care–environmental, historical, medical, psychological, or self-care, to name just a few–one literary act that embodies and exemplifies an ethics of care is literary translation, particularly translation of poetry. This essay is concerned with how poetry translation specifically can be seen as a triangulation of a feminist ethics of care, a form of what Joan Retallack has coined “the poethical wager”, and by what Jerzy Jarniewicz has identified as “a species of translator” known as the legislator. Combined, these concepts demonstrate a poethics of translation and an especially pandemic-resist-ant kind of creative dialogue.
