Sixteen Ways of Looking at Aardvarks, Chinchillas, Lemurs, and More: On Lisa Jarnot’s Post-Humanist Animal Biographic Poetics
In her second book Ring of Fire, American poet Lisa Jarnot offers the reader a dynamic sixteen-poem sequence entitled Heliopolis, a contemporary post-human vortex where various animals – such as aardvarks, chinchillas, or razorback clams, scarcely typical subjects for poetic reverie – often perform a range of implausibly or absurdly anthropomorphic actions. Guided by the work of Erica Fudge, Donna Haraway, Cary Wolfe, and others, this essay will consider how Jarnot’s poetry of nonhuman animals can be read as post-humanist animal biographies that aim to collapse distinctions between corporeal and temporal boundaries. Jarnot’s recursive poetic structures serve to both heighten the rhythmic and ludic qualities of the actions described while toggling between poignant humor and ethical confrontation.
