Abstract:
Two Theories of Money in the Works of Karl Polanyi
In the works of Karl Polanyi one can find not one, but two theories of money. The first, contained in The Great Transformation, maintains that in a market society there is a contradiction between the fiction of automatic money based on the gold parity and the guided money, the supply of which is determined by the policies of the central bank and commercial banks. The second theory, presented in the article “Semantics of Money Uses”, treats money as a semantic system analogous to human speech. According to this view, money acquires meaning through its application in specific, socially-defined situations. The aim of the article is to critically reconstruct both theories and demonstrate their usefulness for understanding the role of money in contemporary market economies.
