Macondo, a place created by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (but also another name of Cavanillesia platanifolia tree), is a symbolic reference to the whole of Latin America. The literary presentation of the tree in Hundred Years of Solitude is a starting point for analysing the situation of the forests in Latin America today and the tree-friendly measures that are being undertaken in the region.
